Of course, these schemas became standardized because they were effective and efficient means to a dramatic end, especially if time was of the essence during the writing process. Continuing on, Zurga then sees a boat arriving and states that it must be an anonymous priestess, whose face no one can see, who comes every year to provide spiritual protection for the tribe.
In a bit of foreshadowing, Zurga threatens that the price for her betrayal would be death. Zurga notices her anxiety and reminds her that she could leave and be free but she composes herself and commits to her duty. Nourabad, the high priest of Brahma, and his fellow priests bring a veiled young woman before Zurga. She is about to follow the old custom: Once a year, a veiled virgin is chosen to pray for the protection of the pearl fishers for a day and a night. Ten years later would come Carmen. Like Carmen , the entire opera has an organic unity and a distinctive, individual sound. In the French language, extreme care is taken to make sure that the sounds flow along in a way that pleases the French ear: many written consonants are not pronounced, and vowels are constantly eliding or making liaisons to ensure a smoothly flowing sound.
Similarly, French music generally has a smooth, flowing character; French composers value balance above everything else, and try to make sure that no one element can overpower all the others. In French opera, for instance, composers write music which does not overwhelm the words. As the sea ebbs and flows in the background of the stage picture, so the waves gently slosh back and forth in the sound of the orchestra throughout the opera.
French opera had featured ballet since Day One, and the ritual dances in The Pearl Fishers allowed the French balletomanes in those first audiences to enjoy ogling the bodies of the scantily-clad native Sri Lankans.
