Not every question can be answered. However, I do resent being patronised. I may be a woman but I am also a competent DIY-er and only asked as the floor is beyond repair and renovation.
Fill in any dents, cracks or holes with wood putty and a putty knife. If you want the floor to be perfectly smooth, fill in the cracks between the pieces of wood. If you do not fill those cracks, the pattern of the floor may show through your paint, which is the desired effect in some cases.
If you want to paint the floor different colors, it is helpful to be able to see the original wood pattern. Allow all putty to dry. Sand the floors with an electric sander. You can also rent a large sander for floors. Be gentle, sand in the direction of the grain of the wood, and don't let the sander stay in one place for long. Try to remove as much of the coating protecting the parquet as possible.
